The FINNFOREST DOOMERNIK MODEL DRAGON
I like Finnforest Birch Plywood ‘unbelievably much’…. It keeps inspiring me, starting with my love for Nordic lines, desig and nature.
It culminated in the creation of The Finnforest Wooden Bath: an adventure with the Ritmeester Team and all the Project Sponsors here which I will never forget in my life.
Everyone who visits us is astonished in seeing this Masterpiece in Wood and I can still recall the magical moments we experienced while designing, creating and milling the most natural of all ‘bathtubs’ I ever saw. It’s all about the lines… both in the design and in the material.
It’s like a beautiful yacht design: the lines never stop….
That inspired me while working on scale models too. We milled a number of scale models: ranging from Ed Kastelein’s ATLANTIC (under construction at De Graaf) to ENDEAVOUR II (to be built at Royal Huisman) and also to a very challenging species: The DOOMERNIK DRAGON.
Joop Doomernik ordered some scale models as a gift for a Greek client and since I wanted to ‘go the distance’ in wooden scale models I selected some different types of wood to have a few milled in CNC during evening and night hours. The milling machine doing it’s work while I was busy upstairs.
A very nice mahogany dragon appeared as well as some others which are now in the spraying department to be finished.
Crossover thinking: A beautiful yacht design is all about proportions and about ‘the lines’… My brains got the combination: if I would mill a model out of Finnforest Birch Plywood You could see 100 % of the lines in the design….
I could not wait to see it happen… Henk Ritmeester, always busy promised me to finish some jobs before he would leave for his well-deserved holiday tomorrow evening. And now, Monday evening September 3 we are milling TWO of the very special FINNFOREST DOOMERNIK MODEL DRAGONS…
They are exactly as I expected; it’s like a 3-D computerized model which shows you all the beauty of the design.
If I would order a new design at a yacht designer my preference would be clear: one model in Finnforest Birch Plywood to judge the lines… There is no other material that can come up to this.
